MBT-C Basic Course
Mentalizing Based Treatment with Children (MBT-C) is a model for working with children in the latency years (ages 4-12) and their parents. MBT-C is a psychoanalytic integrative approach that combines psychodynamic principles with findings from attachment and affect regulation theory, systemic family therapy and empirical research. MBT-C is transdiagnostic and suitable for addressing a range of problems, including emotional and behavioral problems, anxiety, trauma, depression and attachment problems.
This four-day basic course focuses on the time-limited version of MBT-C. This version of MBT-C therapy has a clear diagnostic beginning and focus. The therapy takes place in a series of twelve sessions, which can be extended three times. Work is done with the child and with the parents in parallel tracks, usually by cooperating counselors.
The course is both theoretical and experiential. You will be introduced to various theoretical concepts related to the development of mentalizing. You will learn how to apply them in diagnosis and treatment of children in latency years.
Proper diagnosis is essential for a thorough MBT-C course. You will practice establishing the mentalizing profile of child and parents and translating it into a treatment plan and focus formulation.
You will be taught various intervention techniques and forms of work to shape treatment for children and their parents from the MBT-K model.
Besides the theory, experiencing for yourself what mentalizing-enhancing interventions do to you as a person and as a practitioner is an essential part of Centrum Hecht’s courses. We therefore make extensive use of experiential exercises and examples from our and your own practice.

The third course day takes the form of a plenary supervision day. You present a case on video. You write a reflection report about these video fragments.
If you want to register as an MBT-C practitioner, support and supervision according to this model is mandatory. It helps you to develop a mentalizing attitude and implement MBT techniques learned during the training. View the list of approved MBT-Csupervisors in Netherlands.
