MBT-F Basic Course

MBT-F is a systemic treatment aimed at (re)starting mentalizing within families and partner relationships. This improves the quality of mutual relationships. The basis lies in the explicit or implicit feeling of psychological connection with another person, which allows family members to feel seen, understood and loved. It strengthens mutual trust and enables the family to find solutions to life problems (empowerment) on their own (again). MBT-F is an integrative approach that brings together psychodynamic principles, systemic theory, CBT practices and a social ecological framework to understand and support families. It is a flexible and time-limited approach, to be used in a variety of settings with families experiencing difficulties such as emotional and behavioral problems, anxiety, depression, relational problems and family conflict.

In this course you will learn about the development of mentalizing and how relationships between parent and child can determine this. You will learn how to create a mentalizing profile in parents, identifying when mentalizing does and does not work. We will also pay attention to creative and playful ways to promote mentalizing in family sessions. And we will reflect on your own contribution to mentalizing in the therapeutic process and what your own possibilities and impossibilities are. Of course we have many practical examples of interventions.

  • Do you understand what mentalizing is
  • You can assess the impact of stress, trauma or insecure attachment on mentalizing
  • You are able to identify the mentalizing strengths and weaknesses of a family and of family members individually and thus to draw up a mentalizing profile
  • You can redefine an individual family member’s problem into an interactive family problem
  • You can explain MBT-F and describe the differences with other family therapies
