MBT-A en

MBT-A is a treatment approach for working with adolescents with a wide range of interpersonal problems, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity and self-harm. MBT-A combines individual weekly sessions for adolescents with mentalizing-enhancing family therapy sessions (MBT-F) and/or MBT-A group therapy. The approach aims to increase adolescents' ability to continue to experience and represent their own and others' feelings and thoughts accurately and in emotionally challenging situations. MBT-A has been scientifically proven effective in reducing self-harm and depressive symptoms in adolescents (Rossouw & Fonagy 2012).

This practice-based course provides an introduction to the key elements of the MBT-A model. We will also discuss its application in various settings.

In adolescence, young people develop their self-esteem, affect regulation and impulse control. Being able to mentalize in relationships is an essential prerequisite for this. Therefore, in this course we pay much attention to promoting a mentalizing attitude in the students and actively practicing related skills.

We also pay attention to working with groups and “significant others” in the adolescent’s life given the significant influence peers and family members have at this stage of life.

  • You understand why adolescence is a critical period and how mentalizing theory can help understand the developmental needs of young people.
  • You have knowledge about the key features of MBT-A and how to apply them in your own work setting.
  • You have experienced and learned to apply mentalizing attitudes yourself in work with adolescents and families.
  • You know how to create an MBT-A treatment plan.
  • You have learned to work with the arousal level within therapy and can adapt your interventions to the varying levels of mentalizing in the adolescent.

Clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, gz psychologists, basic psychologists, psychiatrists and college graduates working in CAMHS, called SGGZ in Holland, in which you work with adolescents.

You will create a case conceptualization as learned in the course on the third course day and write a brief reflection on it.

If you want to register as an MBT-A practitioner, support and supervision according to this model is mandatory. It helps you further develop a mentalizing attitude and implement MBT techniques learned during the training.
