Relationships with others, in addition to individual characteristics and environmental factors, are decisive for the development of each person. Infant Mental Health (IMH), which can be understood as a life course view, offers an overarching perspective on a child's developmental course from different disciplines, theoretical and methodical directions. It makes visible that each family system and situation is unique and can have an ever-changing "port of entry. The first relationships in a human life, especially those of child and parents, lay a foundation for the rest of life. IMH therefore wants to pay attention to the quality of those relationships as early as possible. Mentalizing is an essential element in this. Learning to mentalize begins right at birth and is a foundation for the strength of (family) systems.
In this two-day course, you will learn to apply MBT parent counseling in families with young children, from pregnancy to six years, the time when relationships develop and parenthood takes shape. Clinical practice and theory are brought together in this course, with time and attention given to your own case histories in addition to knowledge transfer. As a social worker, as soon as you come into contact with the child and its parents, you are part of the system. That is why in this course we also pay attention to reflecting on your own position in that system and the way you bring mentalizing into it.
Child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists and clinical psychologists (or in training), familytherapists, IMH specialists, basic psychologists, general remedial educationalists.
Bundle of recent articles provided at the start of the course (digital).
You complete the course with a ‘take-home’ assignment, in which you reflect on a provided case study. You put yourself in the described family system, analyze the mentalizing ability of the participants as individuals, as a family and examine the circumstances surrounding ‘the port of entry’.
If you want to register as an MBT-O practitioner, support and supervision according to this model is mandatory. It helps you further develop a mentalizing attitude and implement MBT techniques learned during training.
